Why You Might Need a Sinus Lift Before You Can Get Dental Implants

When it comes to replacing missing teeth, dental implants are often considered the gold standard due to their ability to restore a tooth’s entire structure from root to crown. This means that dental implant restorations don’t just look the part – they are fully functional, resilient, and capable of lasting for a lifetime. However, not everyone with missing teeth is immediately able to get dental implants; some patients must undergo a separate preliminary procedure called a sinus lift beforehand. Here’s more about this process and how it sets your implants up for success.

What Exactly Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift is not a procedure that most people think about before dental implant placement, but for some, it’s an absolute necessity. The process involves raising a portion of the sinus floor to allow new bone tissue to develop, which in turn makes it easier for a dental implant to be placed in a certain area.

The lift is performed by making a tiny incision in the back part of the gum area; a small portion of the bone near the sinus membranes will be cut and lifted into the sinus cavity area, which allows the membrane to rise, providing room for the implant(s). A bone graft is often necessary for anchoring the space, usually coming from a donor or synthetic source. Following a sinus lift, patients usually need anywhere from 6 to 12 months to fully heal. From there, the dental implant surgery can be planned and performed.

Why Might I Need a Sinus Lift?

Keep in mind that not all people who need dental implants end up needing a sinus lift. Generally speaking, patients who’ve also simply lost significant jawbone density due to years of tooth loss likely end up needing preliminary procedures like bone grafts and sinus lifts. More specifically, those who have lost upper back teeth are more likely to need one, as the top jaw might not have adequate room for supporting an implant. People who also tend to have larger sinuses that are close to the tooth roots might also require a lift.

Your dentist will perform a thorough assessment of your jaw structure that involves taking X-rays and digital scans, and they’ll let you know if you need a sinus lift before you can receive dental implants. Though this process may prolong your new smile, it’s absolutely necessary – your dental implants would likely fail otherwise!
